Rinca Island & Komodo Dragons

We flew to Flores, an island of beautiful volcanic topography. The majority of its population is Catholic, which leads to many of its inhabitants having very normal names by American standards - William, Paul, John etc. The first stop was Labuanbajo, a coastal town, right next to Komodo National Park.

We rented a boat for a day with 3 other travelers and headed out for Rinca Island. If you look closely in the photo you can't see London or France, but there is our Captain in his underpants.

A view from the boat - the land around this area is akin to a tropical Scotland - quite magnificent

The great komodo dragon is only found on the islands of Rinca, Komodo, and there are a few on Flores. The komodo dragon or ora (local name) is a monitor lizard, and can grow to be 10 feet long and weigh over 350lbs. It has very powerful jaws and can expand them wide enough to swallow whole prey like goats. When tackling even larger animals, like the local buffalo it merely bites the creature and waits for the lethal bacteria in its mouth to slowly kill it (about 2 weeks). They are very lazy lizards, but can reach speeds of 13mph when they're hungry.

Sam at the Rinca Park Office - the komodo's are getting friendly with one another on the poster

Me at the park armory - your guide carries one of these sticks and uses it to tickle the Komodo if it gets too close.

Close enough for me. While we were standing by this group of lizards, a local threw some food to them and they went "ape shit," and started moving very quickly towards us with their jaws open. The guide ran behind us with the stick & shouted catch phrases like "its OK" and "don't worry".

This guy was waiting for us at the docks - its best to be faster than your girlfriend

The man on the right partied too much last night, the guy in the middle wishes he went partying, and the guy on the left is too busy to care, because he's currently driving the boat.
